Session abstract: Promoting student engagement is an important goal for any instructor. Furthermore, various academic integrity experts argue that motivating students to maximize their learning experience in our course is an excellent antidote to academic dishonesty. But how can help students remain engaged despite the many challenges of the current academic year? In this workshop, we will discuss strategies instructors can use in the hybrid or online classroom that set the stage for engaged learning. Participants can expect to leave this workshop with concrete practices that foster connections, promote a positive course climate, and whet students’ appetites for course content.

Speaker bio: Meg Mittelstadt is Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Georgia, where she leads university efforts associated with the educational development of faculty and graduate teaching assistants, learning technologies, classroom support and learning spaces, instructional media services, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Prior to joining UGA in 2018, Dr. Mittelstadt was the Director of Training and Education for the Landry Cancer Biology Consortium at Harvard University and a Lecturer of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Mittelstadt completed a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology both at the University of South Carolina. She performed postdoctoral research in epigenetics and gene-environment interactions at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Texas A&M Health Science Center.
