About the Center
The International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI) was founded in 1992 by Don McCabe, a professor at Rutgers University, to combat cheating, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty in higher education. Its mission has since expanded to include the cultivation of cultures of integrity in academic communities throughout the world. ICAI’s core beliefs focus on the six Fundamental Values of Academic Integrity., These values serve as a touchstone for our organization and our members.
Prior to its establishment as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit in 2018, ICAI was organized within universities, most recently at Clemson University. ICAI founder Don McCabe is widely considered to be the “founding father” of the field of academic integrity. In 1993, McCabe conducted the first academic study of cheating at the college level. His findings and subsequent work led to a robust field of academic research. ICAI has continued and expanded on his work. ICAI is conducting the ICAI-McCabe Student Survey of Academic Integrity in 2021, which is named in McCabe's honor.
Our Members
ICAI welcomes individuals, institutions, agencies, and corporations who share our dedication to building cultures of honesty and integrity within academics and society at large. ICAI membership benefits are extended to faculty, administrators, students, and staff at membership institutions around the globe, and to its individual members, partners, and supporting organizations.
In order to meet the continually evolving needs of our membership, ICAI encourages, supports, and shares research that predicts, describes, and responds to trends and issues relating to academic integrity standards and practices. Much of this work is the focus during the ICAI Annual Conference, typically held in March each year, and of the regional conferences, held in various regions of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and South and Central America.
