2025 ICAI Southeast Regional Virtual Conference: It takes a village
by Phillip Griffeth
This year’s conference theme is “It Takes a Village: Holistic Education in the Era of AI” and organizers hope to capture the perspectives of three stakeholder groups:
- Practitioners- how they implement AI in teaching while fostering student critical thinking and addressing challenges encountered;
- Students - how they use AI and their perspectives on its role in education;
- Administrators - how they support students and practitioners through policies, educational programs, and adjudication processes.
We are thrilled to have Dr. William (Bill) Kibler, Vice President for Student Affairs at Texas A&M University, as our keynote speaker. Dr. Kibler has previously served as a founding board member and president of both the Association for Student Conduct Administration and the International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI).
The ICAI Southeast Regional Virtual Conference builds on strong foundation of recent regional conferences. Here’s a look at the last few years:
Emory University brought back the ICAI Southeast Regional Conference in person on October 25-26, 2019. While the conference had no proscribed topic, there were presentations, workshops, and panel discussions about campus programming initiatives, best practices for case resolution, campus partnerships, and the role of faculty and students in promoting integrity.
The following fall brought the pandemic and the 2020 Southeast Regional ICAI Sharing Conference was hosted virtually by the Academy for Teaching and Learning Excellence (ATLE) at the University of South Florida. Concurrent sessions included topics such as “Lessons Learned from the Pandemic” by Lee Ann Clements, Director of Academic Integrity and Academic Support, Professor of Biology & Marine Science, Jacksonville University and “How to Pursue a Chegg Investigation” by Kelly Ahuna, Director, Office of Academic Integrity, University at Buffalo, SUNY. There was a Student Panel: “Peer-to-Peer Virtual Engagement” led by Courtney Cullen then of the University of Georgia and featuring three undergraduate students along with “Teachable Moments: Developing On-line Action Plans for Students found In-Violation of Academic Integrity” by Jennifer Wright, Program Manager, Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, University of Central Florida.
The 2021 Southeast Regional Consortium Virtual Conference hosted by University of Georgia’s Office of Academic Honesty on October 28-29, 2021 featured two tracks: Teaching & Learning and Policy & Practice. Dr. Robert Branch, Professor and Department Head of the Department of Workforce Education and Instructional Technology at UGA, led a Lunch & Learn entitled “Addressing Academic Misconduct Means Engaging in Conflict”. Alexis Ramsey-Tobienne presented on “Upvoting Integrity: Subreddits on Academic Integrity” and a student panel addressed “Serving on Honor Councils & Maintaining Academic Integrity During & Beyond COVID-19”.
While no virtual conference was held in 2022, the Regional Consortium introduced “IntegriTEA Talks” – with monthly sessions in the fall on the following topics: Student Training in Academic Integrity, Proctoring Exams and Assignments, Contract Cheating in the Southeast, and a SEICAI Town Hall.
The 2023 SEICAI Conference held October 26-27, 2023 was hosted by the University of South Carolina with the theme “Connecting to Integrity” featuring such topics as “Integrating Gen-AI into Academic Integrity” by Tiffany Willis and “ChatGPT is coming for us all! (Or not.)” by Christian Moriarty – sound familiar?
The 2024 Virtual Conference “AI: The Next Frontier” was co-chaired by LaShondrell Dancer and Heather Frase of Western Governors University and held November 1, 2024. Topics included “Facilitating a Student Centered, Ethical Approach to Gen AI” and “Navigating Academic Integrity in the Era of ChatGPT: The Lessons We Learned & What's Next”.
Back to this year:
In addition to hearing from academic integrity practitioners, faculty, and students, the annual virtual conference provides an opportunity for networking and sharing about the latest opportunities and challenges in promoting academic integrity at our respective institutions. Proposals are being accepted until September 20 and may be submitted here. The free conference registration form can be found here.
We look forward to welcoming you to the conference on Friday October 24, 2025 9.30am-3pm ET!
