All hands on deck! Program out for IDoA2024!

Written by Mary Davis

It’s here!
Our program of live events for International Day of Action for Academic Integrity on October 16 is now available – please check it out, register to attend and join us!
Since our launch of the event (see my launch blog from July), we have been working on creative and interactive ways to engage everyone positively in academic integrity! Huge thanks to everyone who has been helping us get to this point, including co-chair Rachel Gorjup and IDoA Committee members (Jennie Miron, Thomas Lancaster, Zeenath Reza Khan, Sue Hackett, Iryna Pavlova, Emilienne Akpan, Luz Godina, Lucy Puente, Camilla Roberts, Maggie Barlow) and student and faculty working groups. I can now warmly invite you to the program of live events!

Networks
This is a free, global and inclusive event; any student or staff member from any institution is welcome to join. We aim to join up the many international networks of academic integrity around the world, and as such, ICAI members will be joined by colleagues in the Australasian Academic Integrity Network (AAIN), the European Network for Academic Integrity (ENAI) and the Latin American Network for Academic Integrity. We are all striving to achieve the same thing: engage everyone in academic integrity!

Locations
The live events are all happening on the screen, but coming from a wide range of locations. I am excited to co-host with Rachel Gorjup the18 sessions over 15 hours, with more than 80 student and staff speakers who are in at least 13 countries (Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Turkey, South Africa, Nigeria, Czechia, UK, Ireland, Canada, USA, Mexico, Chile).

Roles
We want to look at everyone’s responsibility for academic integrity, so we are including panelists in a wide range of roles, within and beyond academia:
• Students, student ambassadors, student champions, alumni
• Teaching staff/Faculty
• Academic integrity leads and officers
• Academic support staff
• Librarians
• Higher Education leaders
• Quality Assurance bodies
• Parents of students

Questions
What are the burning questions and current concerns about academic integrity for you? Through many panel discussions across the day, we will be debating and discussing with you some key issues for academic integrity from different perspectives:

1. Teaching
• How do we encourage teaching staff to report breaches in the age of GenAI?
• How can we introduce students to academic integrity?
• How can we create an inclusive environment for academic integrity?

2. Student engagement
• What can students do to support and promote academic integrity?
• What dilemmas do students face related to academic integrity?
• Are student pledges effective?
• What do students think about learning academic integrity and ethics for their future careers?

3. Leading and influencing
• What role can national quality assurance bodies play in academic integrity?
• How can individuals in varied roles make a difference to academic integrity?
• What role do parents play in academic integrity?
• What role do librarians play in academic integrity?
• How can those leading Higher Education Institutions influence academic integrity practices?

4. Starting movements
• How do you get started with academic integrity in a new/underdeveloped context?
• How do we organise academic integrity offices?
• How do we build momentum across institutions?
• How do we create ‘an integrity campus’?

Focus on inclusion
I believe all of these questions are important and will hopefully inspire you to join us, participate in and benefit from the day. To me, this question: ‘How can we create an inclusive environment for academic integrity?’ is one that particularly resonates and will be a continuous element of IDoA. I am also excited to announce that we will be launching an ENAI working group on inclusion in academic integrity; please contact me if you are interested!

Pre-event October 2
Aside from the live events on IDoA, there are some other ways to get involved. We have a pre-event on October 2, with our annual expert round-up on academic integrity matters from Thomas Lancaster and Irene Glendinning, exciting student panel discussions and previews for IDoA. See the Pre-event program on the website and register here for October 2.

Resources
We have a set of open-access downloadable resources which we have made specifically for the day, with a nautical theme, including: Staying Calm in Choppy Waters (student advice); Academic Integrity Ship’s Roster (role discussion activity). Our resources will be available on the IDoA2024 website soon.

Social media contest
Please do share and post on social media about IDoA. And encourage your students to post too: our student contest this year is a social media post, to be submitted via the entry form by 23.59 (EDT) on October 16, on the theme of student responsibility for academic integrity.

Thanks to everyone already for all their work and contributions to IDoA2024. Now we just need attendees on the day! Don’t forget to register, please promote widely and look forward to seeing you soon for a great Day of Action!
