ICAI Conference: Calgary here we come!

Written by Chris Bryson

Over 250 researchers, teachers, practitioners, and students plan to head to Calgary in the coming days for the upcoming conference! ICAI would not be ICAI without our annual conference, and this year’s agenda is packed with sessions and events that will not disappoint. Our Canadian ICAI members have worked extremely hard in preparation for this conference to offer some unique experiences that we cannot wait to share with you. Here is a list of some of the highlights we have planned:

Traditional Knowledge Keeper
To begin the conference, we are thankful that a Traditional Knowledge Keeper/Elder from the Tsuut’ina Nation has agreed to welcome everyone to Treaty 7 territory. This will likely include a short speech and traditional Indigenous blessing. Special thanks to the University of Calgary faculty, Dr. Sarah Eaton and Keeta Gladue, for organizing this event.

Keynote Speaker – Dr. Martine Peters
Dr. Martine Peters is our featured keynote speaker. Her contributions to the field have been felt throughout the world, and her research focus could not be timelier for the moment. Dr. Peters has served as a professor at the Université du Québec en Outaouais teaching French and Technopedagogy since 2006. Her research has focused on topics such as plagiarism, process and digital scrapbooking strategies in technopedagogy, and artificial intelligence and the writing process. She serves as the Director of the Partnership on University Plagiarism Prevention (PUPP), which consists of a research team of over 60 individuals that span 10 different countries who focus on plagiarism prevention.

University of Calgary Book Launch
We have been invited to join the University of Calgary for a Book Launch of the Handbook of Academic Integrity 2nd ed. on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. This celebration will include some of the authors sharing information about their research, book signings, and a chance to network with a variety of experts in the field. Please make sure to RSVP by March 6, 2024 if you plan to be there. There is no cost to attend, and light refreshments will be provided.

Plenary and Concurrent Session Agenda
If you haven’t downloaded Whova yet, you haven’t had a chance to dig into the 54 abstracts describing all of the concurrent sessions offered at this year’s conference! The lineup includes a plethora of sessions focused on different aspects of generative artificial intelligence. There will also be a wide variety of sessions addressing topics such as education/prevention, culture-building, restorative practices, faculty support, and much more. These sessions will be in addition to two plenary sessions. First, Dr. Tricia Bertram Gallant will be moderating a panel of experts to discuss generative artificial intelligence Saturday mid-morning. Second, ICAI’s Research Committee will be presenting joint/comparative findings related to the surveys they have conducted with students and faculty. The ideas that are generated in these sessions are sure to impact the higher education landscape, and attendees will be well-equipped to bring these concepts back to their campuses.

ICAI is extremely grateful to all the presenters at this year’s conference. The time, effort, and dedication required to give back in this manner is significant, and the conference would not be possible without all of you. This year’s conference is sure to be one for the ages because of our members. We look forward to seeing everyone in the beautiful city of Calgary very soon!
